A Ripped Off Finger Wasn’t The Worst…..

While glancing over the sports headlines, I was very surprised when I saw an article about the Arizona Cardinals titled, “Rashad Johnson Loses Part of Finger.”  I began reading the story and learned that the tip of his finger was torn off just before halftime when he tried to block and tackle on a punt.  I was even more surprised when the end of the paragraph mentioned that Johnson’s injury was the third worst in the Arizona Cardinals vs. New Orleans Saints game this past Sunday.


What 2 injuries could be worse than losing the tip of a finger? As it turns out, a lower leg injury and a mid-foot injury topped the list.  Arizona starting outside linebackers Sam Acho and Lorenzo Alexander will be out for the rest of the season because of a fractured left fibula (the bone on the outside of your leg) and a Lisfranc injury, respectively.  A Lisfranc injury involves one or more of the long bones in the foot (metatarsal bones) dislocating from the bones underneath your ankle (tarsal bones.)


As evidenced by Alexander, Lisfranc injuries can be seen in athletes, especially football and soccer players.  They occur when the foot is pointed down towards the ground and another player steps on the back of the heel. Other sports that can cause Lisfranc injuries frequently involve straps binding your feet down like windsurfing, snowboarding, and wakeboarding.


Lisfranc injuries are common after car accidents and work related accidents.  A direct Lisfranc injury could be caused by a crush injury, having your foot ran over, or landing on your foot after a fall from a significant height.  Falling off of a horse while your foot remains stuck in the stirrup as well as stepping in a storm drain and falling forward could cause an indirect Lisfranc injury.


Sometimes an injury that you would classify as twisting or spraining an ankle can really be a Lisfranc injury.  Common symptoms include pain and swelling on the top of the foot, bruising on the top and bottom of the foot, and severe pain.  If you have rested, elevated, and iced your foot and you aren’t noticing any symptom relief, you may have a more serious injury than what you previously thought.
